Mårten Gås

About the holiday

Mårten Gås is a holiday celebrated on November 10th, often with a goose dinner. The holiday used to be celebrated all over Sweden, but today is mainly associated with Skåne (southern part of Sweden). The classic goose dinner with black soup, goose and Scanian apple cake was created around 1850 by a restaurant owner at Piperska Muren in Stockholm.

In the olden days, the 40-day fast leading up to Christmas was started by eating goose on this particular day. They also celebrated the saint St. Martin, who is said to have hid among geese to avoid becoming a bishop.
