About
Profossen can be used both as a small meeting room or as a group room for large conferences. Here you have a view of the exercising yards from the 1840s where the film “Release the Prisoners to Spring” (Swedish title: Släpp fångarne loss det är vår) is made.
History
Profossen’s (the provost’s) job was to keep the spinning house and the prisoners in good order. In the past it was the provost’s job to administer corporal punishment in the army. Since the supervision of the prison until well into the 19th century, it was the provost who administered the corporal punishments with his “karbas” (a braided leather whip). There is evidence in Långholmen’s spinning house from 1725 of how “the provost punished quite a number of women”. The title ”provost” was still used until mid 19th century, however, flogging did not disappear with the title but was administered until well into the 20th century. Flogging and corporal punishment were officially abolished in 1927.
