L\u00e5ngholmen has a long and interesting history.<\/strong> In one way or another, the island has fulfilled special functions for Stockholm.<\/p>\n

THE HOTELS HISTORY<\/strong>
Despite it’s central location in the city of Stockholm, much of L\u00e5ngholmen\u2019s countryside and many buildings of cultural and historical interest remain. Today, you are met by a modern hotel with renovated “cells” and daring design solutions. THE ISLAND<\/strong>
As the name suggests, L\u00e5ngholmen is a long and narrow island. In older times, it consisted of lean pastures situated amongst bare rocks. On the island, there are traces of ancient dwellings dating back to the 10th century. In the 19th century, a silver hoard of German coins minted in the 10th century was found here. The island was first mentioned in historical documents in 1435. These medieval documents relate that Sweden\u2019s Council of State held a meeting in L\u00e5ngholmen.<\/p>\n

Another historic event was that Gustav Vasa stationed his troops on the island before occupying the city in 1523. L\u00e5ngholmen belonged to the Crown until 1647 when Queen Christina donated the island to Stockholm City.<\/p>\n

THE FIRST SETTLEMENT<\/strong>
In 1622, a marine customs house was set up on the island. It operated until 1857. Moored by the customs house were fast sailing yachts that could chase and bring back vessels that \u201cforgot\u201d to go through customs. The great expansion of shipping on Lake M\u00e4laren in Sweden\u2019s Age of Greatness prompted the establishment of a shipyard for building small craft at P\u00e5lsundet (the channel between S\u00f6der M\u00e4larstrand and L\u00e5ngholmen) in 1685.<\/p>\n

ALSTAVIK<\/strong>
In 1649, the wealthy brewer Jochum Ahlstedt rented parts of the island and began cultivating them. He built a majestic residence, Alstavik. The residence was acquired by the State in 1724 and converted into a spinning house, i.e. a penal institution for women.<\/p>\n

THE PRISON<\/strong>
The prison operations were expanded afterwards and came to dominate the island for 250 years. During the prison epoch, some large private buildings were also erected on the island. The waterfront to M\u00e4laren was embellished during the latter half of the 19th century. Large quantities of soil were laid on the rock and 3000 trees were planted by the prisoners. Thanks to this, the island is a green oasis. At the beginning of the 20th century, the City planned to make a park on the eastern side of the island, and some paths and planted areas were laid out. It is now that the island lived up to its reputation \u2013 the green island in the heart of Stockholm. The prison was closed down in 1975.<\/p>\n

A NEW ERA<\/strong>
For a while, the prison buildings were falling into decay and quite a lot had to be demolished later. In 1989 opened L\u00e5ngholmen\u2019s Hotel and Youth Hostel with inn and conference space. A new era starts and now everyone can enjoy the beautiful island with its captivating history.<\/p>\n

Historien f\u00f6r \u00f6n b\u00f6rjar<\/h2>

L\u00e5ngholmen \u00e4r, som h\u00f6rs p\u00e5 namnet, en l\u00e5ngsmal \u00f6. I \u00e4ldre tid bestod \u00f6n av magra betesmarker mellan kala berg. Man har funnit sp\u00e5r av forntida boplatser fr\u00e5n s\u00e5 tidigt som 900-tal. P\u00e5 1800-talet hittades h\u00e4r en silverskatt med tyska mynt, pr\u00e4glade p\u00e5 900-talet. F\u00f6rsta g\u00e5ngen \u00f6n omtalas i historien \u00e4r 1435 d\u00e5 medeltida dokument ber\u00e4ttar att Sveriges riksr\u00e5d h\u00f6ll ett m\u00f6te p\u00e5 L\u00e5ngholmen.<\/p>

En annan historisk h\u00e4ndelse var d\u00e5 Gustav Vasa f\u00f6rlade sina trupper p\u00e5 \u00f6n innan han intog staden 1523. L\u00e5ngholmen tillh\u00f6rde kronan fram till 1647 d\u00e5 drottning Christina donerade \u00f6n till Stockholm stad.<\/p>

F\u00f6rsta bebyggelsen<\/h2>

P\u00e5 \u00f6n inr\u00e4ttades en sj\u00f6tull 1622 som var verksam till 1857. Vid sj\u00f6tullen l\u00e5g snabba segeljakter som kunde stoppa farkoster som \u201dgl\u00f6mt\u201d att g\u00e5 in i tullen. Den \u00f6kade sj\u00f6farten p\u00e5 M\u00e4laren under stormaktstiden var upphovet till att ett mindre skutvarv etablerades vid P\u00e5lsundet 1685. (Sundet mellan S\u00f6der M\u00e4larstrand och L\u00e5ngholmen).<\/p>

Alstavik<\/h2>

Den v\u00e4lbest\u00e4llde bryggaren Jochum Ahlstedt arrenderade 1649 markomr\u00e5den p\u00e5 \u00f6n som han odlade upp. Han byggde h\u00e4r ett st\u00e5tligt stenhus, Alstavik. Malmg\u00e5rden f\u00f6rv\u00e4rvades av staten 1724 och omvandlades till spinnhus, en straffinr\u00e4ttning f\u00f6r kvinnor.<\/p>

F\u00e4ngelset<\/h2>

F\u00e4ngelseverksamheten byggdes ut efterhand och kom att dominera \u00f6n under 250 \u00e5r. Under f\u00e4ngelsetiden uppf\u00f6rdes \u00e4ven n\u00e5gra stora privatbyggnader p\u00e5 \u00f6n. Sj\u00f6sidan mot M\u00e4laren f\u00f6rsk\u00f6nades under 1800-talet senare del. Stora m\u00e4ngder av lera lades p\u00e5 berget och 3000 tr\u00e4d planterades av f\u00e5ngarna. Det \u00e4r tack vare det som \u00f6n \u00e4r en gr\u00f6n oas. I b\u00f6rjan av 1900-talet planerade staden att anl\u00e4gga en natur- och folkpark p\u00e5 \u00f6stra sidan och en del v\u00e4gar och parkplanteringar anlades.
